The boat tour of Portage Glacier will take you right up close to this Alaskan wonder. You'll get an up-close view of this incredible wall of blue ice.
Boat Tour Details
On the day of the activity, we’ll meet at 1500 Byron Glacier Road in the port of Whittier, which is just 1 hour from Anchorage. Once everyone has arrived, we’ll set out on a boat tour of the Portage Glacier. Are you ready for one of Alaska’s most popular day trips?
Once aboard this cruise ship, we’ll sail along the valley to get an up-close view of the Portage Glacier. Since the glacier has retreated significantly over the past few decades due to climate change, the boat tour is the only way to see it up close, as it’s no longer visible from the visitor center.
During the cruise, you can relax in the enclosed cabin with its large windows or head out onto the open-air upper deck, the best spot for taking photos! Once we reach the glacier, we’ll drop anchor so you can admire this majestic wall of ice and its various shades of blue in full detail. Plus, the onboard guide will tell us all about the valley’s geology and history.
After this magical moment in front of the glacier, we’ll continue sailing across Portage Lake while enjoying the views of the waterfalls, the rugged mountains ahead of us, and the small ice islands.
Finally, we’ll return to the starting point 1 hour later, bringing the boat tour to a close. Don’t miss out on this experience if you’re in Alaska!
