Delve into the volcanic depths of Terceira and discover the majesty of its geological formations. We'll discover the natural heritage of the Azores: the volcanic caves of Algar do Carvão, Gruta do Natal and the fascinating fumaroles of Furnas do Enxofre.

Volcanic Caves Day Trip

We'll pick you up from your hotel or from the indicated point in Angra do Heroísmo at the indicated time and begin our route to the volcanic caves of Terceira on board an off-road vehicle or a van, with the leafy forests and the characteristic fields of hydrangeas keeping you company along the way.

Cutting through the lesser-traveled trails of Terceira and making various stops at places known only to the guides, we'll arrive at the Guilherme Moniz crater, 640 m (2,099 ft) high. Here you can see the island's most important geological features: the Algar do Carvão and the Gruta do Natal. We'll tour these volcanic caves, exploring their interiors and the Azorian vegetation which flourishes inside, including holly, moss, and laurel.

As we get to know the history surrounding the formation of these caves, we'll admire the stalactites and cavities on the surface, even arriving at a hidden pond inside, adding a magical touch to proceedings.

We'll also visit the Furnas do Enxofre, a place famous for its geothermal activity, with fumaroles that emit sulphurous steam from deep in the earth. You'll be able to closely observe this natural phenomenon that reminds us of the volcanic origin of the Azores.

On the way back in the vehicle, we'll cross the main roads of the island to enjoy the scenery of Terceira. After between 3 and 4 hours of full immersion in nature, we'll head back to the hotel or the departure point.

Please note that Algar do Carvão may occasionally be closed for maintenance or due to weather conditions. In such cases, the itinerary will be modified, and we'll visit a hidden lava tube instead to ensure that you have a complete volcanic experience.
