On this off-roading vehicle tour from Antigua Guatemala, we’ll explore Acatenango Volcano, spend the night at a camp, and watch eruptions from the neighboring Fuego Volcano. Adventure awaits!
At the indicated time, we’ll meet at Tanque de La Unión and head in a powerful off-roading vehicle toward the slopes of Acatenango Volcano, one of the most imposing stratovolcanoes in Central America. Let’s go!
After approximately 1 hour on the road, we’ll begin the ascent aboard the off-roading vehicle, which will allow us to complete close to 80% of the route.
During this journey, lasting between 1 hour and 1.5 hours, we’ll cross volcanic landscapes with remarkable geological richness, featuring basaltic soils, solidified lava flows, and vegetation adapted to the altitude. Did you know Acatenango has 3 different microclimatic zones? We’ll go from heat to freezing temperatures in a single day!
At the end of the ascent by off-roading vehicle, we’ll begin a hike of between 1.5 hours and 2 hours to the summit. This final stretch will be the most demanding, as we’ll follow a steep and sandy trail that requires good physical endurance.
Once we reach the summit of Acatenango, we’ll enjoy around 30 minutes to rest, take photos, and admire the panoramic views of Fuego Volcano.
After this stop, we’ll descend on foot to the base camp, located at a strategic point with great views of the volcanic surroundings. There, we’ll enjoy a dinner made with seasonal products that usually includes 2 courses. With full stomachs, we’ll rest and spend the night in shared cabins.
The following morning, we’ll admire the sunrise over Acatenango Volcano while enjoying a breakfast that includes oatmeal, pancakes, or a sandwich. Afterward, we’ll take a 40-minute hike to the point where the off-roading vehicle will be waiting for us.
The descent by vehicle will last around 1 hour, and afterward we’ll return by road to Antigua Guatemala on an additional 1-hour journey. Arrival back at the original meeting point is scheduled for around noon.
This tour includes 1 night in shared cabins at the Acatenango Volcano camp. Each cabin accommodates 6, 8, or up to 10 people. You’ll sleep on sleeping pads with sleeping bags included. The bathroom is shared.
