Discover the history of the ancient fortified temple of Chankillo on this excursion from Casma, which also includes a visit to the carob tree forest located at the archaeological site.
Chankillo & Carob Tree Forest Excursion
After picking you up at 9 am at your hotel in Casma, we'll head to the archaeological site of Chankillo, located just half an hour away.
Chankillo was declared a World Heritage Site in July 2021, but what makes this site so special? It's the oldest astronomical complex in the Americas, dating all the way back to between 257 and 201 BC! During the visit to this site, we'll learn fascinating details about the region's worldview.
We'll continue the tour observing the ancient fortified temple, which is 300 meters long and has several concentric walls standing over 5 meters high. Several reasons could explain these dimensions, although during the tour we'll learn about the most plausible theory. This thesis is based on other remains discovered in the area, which would demonstrate that certain recreations of battles were carried out here.
Many carob tree trunks that served as lintels have also been found in the fortress of Chankillo. After discovering how these architectural elements were designed, we'll visit the carob tree forest located in the same archaeological center. This is a unique forest area where we'll learn about the properties and benefits of this tree.
From the carob forest of Chankillo, we'll return to your hotel in Casma, where we'll arrive between 11 and 11:30 am.
