Day Trip Details
At the indicated time, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Évora and, from there, we'll make our way to the area of Montemor.
After a journey of just 30 minutes, we'll arrive at Montemor-o-Novo Castle, one of the most spectacular medieval fortresses in the Alentejo region. Are you ready to learn about its fascinating history?
Upon our arrival at this imposing bastion, we'll take a 1-hour guided tour of the castle ruins and its Interpretation Centre. First, we'll visit the museum's rooms, where we'll see models and archaeological pieces that will give us a better understanding of the period in which the fortress was built.
Next, we'll tour the ruins of the castle of Montemor-o-Novo. During the tour, we'll learn about the history of Sancho I of Portugal, the king who ordered the construction of this stronghold in the 12th century. At that time, the Christian kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula were immersed in the Reconquista, the reconquest of territory from the Muslims, so the construction of castles was essential to this task.
During the visit, we'll see the Paço dos Alcaides and the remains of the castle walls, as well as the Angel and Clock towers. The latter is located next to the convent of Nossa Senhora da Saudação.
Finally, from the castle, we'll enjoy beautiful panoramic views of Montemor-o-Novo. From this town in the Alentejo region, we'll return to your hotel in Évora, arriving 2 hours after pickup.
