Discover two of the most famous places in central Peru's Oxapampa region on our day trip to Villa Rica and El Oconal Lagoon. You'll visit a place that's millions of years old and incredibly biodiverse.
Villa Rica & El Oconal Lagoon Day Trip
At 8 am, we'll pick you up from your hotel in La Merced and start exploring some of the amazing places in the province of Oxapampa.
Did you know that this area has been inhabited by three different civilizations? To the east were the Campas, to the west the Amueshas and to the northeast the Cashibos. These three cultures were all Amazonian tribes that lived in harmony. Today, this region is characterised by its beautiful waterfalls as well as its coffee, pineapple and rocoto crops which we'll see during our trip.
Our first stop will be in the village of Villa Rica. Here, we'll tell you about the municipality's important role as a coffee producer. As we stroll through the streets we'll see the Chapel of Our Lady of Rosario, which is built entirely of wood, as well as the Plaza de Armas in the heart of the town.
You'll then have some free time to eat lunch before we set off for the El Oconal Lagoon. This important wetland area is inhabited by fish such as catfish and tilapia, as well as white herons. Did you know that the latest research has discovered that this lagoon was formed by fluvial deposits during the Cenozoic period some 50 million years ago?
We'll return to La Merced and drop you off at your hotel after an unforgettable 9-hour day trip.
