Stroll around the main religious sanctuaries and convents in the Peruvian capital on our Lima Churches Tour. We'll explore architectural gems such as the sanctuaries of Saint Rosa de Lima and Saint Martín de Porres.
Lima Churches Tour
We'll meet at the scheduled time at the entrance of the Church of the Nazarenas and start our tour around Lima's churches. Since its very beginnings, the Peruvian capital has been linked to Catholicism. This is due to the Spanish conquistadores who brought Catholicism to this region and the friars who dedicated their lives to converting the local indigenous populations to their faith.
Did you know that Lima had two saints and that it's the seat of the Archdiocese of Peru? We'll learn all about this and more during the tour. First of all, we'll go to the sanctuary and monastery of Las Nazarenas, an imposing religious complex where the image of the Lord of Miracles is venerated.
Our tour will then continue to the Sanctuary of Saint Rosa de Lima. Between the 16th and 17th centuries the saint from Lima, who was born and died in this city, lived here. We'll then visit the house where Saint Martín de Porres, another of Lima's patron saints, lived.
We'll continue walking until we reach the Convent of Santo Domingo, where we'll immediately notice its impressive rococo bell tower. In this sanctuary, the remains of the three most venerated saints of Peru are laid to rest: Saint Rosa de Lima, Saint Martín de Porres and Saint John Macias.
The next stop will be at the Plaza de Armas, where we'll see the beautiful Cathedral of Lima. This spot is the resting place of the famous conqueror and founder of Lima, Francisco Pizarro. After this visit, we'll head to the Convent of San Francisco, one of the most symbolic buildings in Lima.
Lastly, we'll head to St. Peter's Basilica. This 16th-century building was founded by the Society of Jesus and is considered an undisputed architectural treasure.
After 4 hours spent exploring this monastic city's religious history, we'll end the tour at St. Peter's Basilica.
