Belmont House is not just an architectural gem; it reflects the ambition of Adelicia Acklen, the wife of Joseph Acklen, a figure who defied the norms of her time. Thanks to her business acumen, she managed to amass a fortune that would be worth hundreds of millions of dollars today. She was one of the few women of her time to control her own wealth.
With this ticket to Belmont House, you’ll travel back to a time of great contrasts. Built in 1849 as a luxurious summer villa, this Italian-style property became one of the largest and most opulent private residences in the southern United States. The mansion was designed to impress the political and social elite and served as a hub of high society where inventors, presidents, and artists were welcomed.
At the height of its splendor, the mansion’s grounds, now home to Belmont University, featured a private zoo, a cactus garden, exotic greenhouses, and a 30-meter (98.4 ft) tall water tower, which can still be seen today. During the Battle of Nashville, the mansion’s tower was used by the Union Army as an observation post due to its strategic hilltop location.
Unlike other historic homes, during your visit you’ll see an astonishing amount of original furniture, paintings, and marble statues that the Acklens acquired on their travels through Europe. Every corner has been restored with such historical accuracy that you’ll feel as though the family has just stepped out of the room.
