Want to explore the first capital of the state of Minas Gerais? On this day trip to Mariana, we'll learn the history of this city founded in the 17th century. We'll also visit an old gold mine that back in the day was highly profitable for the Portuguese Crown.
Day Trip to Mariana
At 9 am we'll pick you up at your hotel in Ouro Preto and head east to visit Mariana. The minibus ride will take 30 minutes.
Once we have arrived at our destination, we'll approach Minas Gerais square, the heart of the village. Thanks to the altitude of this area, we'll enjoy a perfect panoramic view of the streets and houses of the town, as well as the mountains surrounding Mariana.
During the tour, we'll see the exterior of the City Hall, the Carmen and San Francisco churches, and the Pelourinho, a building used to issue punishments to lawbreakers in colonial times.
After getting to know the historic center of Mariana, we'll return to the minibus and go to the Passagem gold mine. There, we'll board a mining wagon and begin to descend into the depths of the earth to see the galleries and tunnels hidden beneath the surface. In the past, almost 35 tons of gold came out of this mine and went directly to the Portuguese Crown.
We'll return to the surface and finish the excursion at 12 noon arriving back at your hotel in Ouro Preto.
