Certosa di Padula Tour
After pickup at your hotel in Palinuro, we'll hit the road by bus to Padula, a town in Salerno and home to the Charterhouse of San Lorenzo, known as the Certosa di Padula. Ready to explore this grandiose religious complex?
Once we arrive at the monastery, declared a World Heritage Site in 1998, we'll first observe its imposing Baroque façade. Then, we'll go inside and our guide will explain what the Carthusian rule involved and how it influenced the architectural structure of the charterhouse.
We'll explore the areas dedicated to contemplation, such as the chapels and the church, where we'll be able to see the polychrome decorations of the altars and the wonderful 16th-century choirs. We'll also explore the spaces dedicated to work, such as the laundries, the large kitchen and the library of the so-called Reggia del Silenzio (Palace of Silence). The marble spiral staircase that gives access to this room will leave you speechless!
During the tour, we'll also visit the famous cloisters of the Padula Charterhouse, including the Great Cloister, dating back to the late 18th century. Its name, although lacking in originality, is not accidental: boasting 15,000 square meters surrounded by a portico with 84 arches, it is one of the largest cloisters in the world!
After a four-hour excursion, we'll return to the hotels in Palinuro and the experience will conclude.
