On this day trip to Taormina from Tropea, we'll travel from Calabria to Sicily, crossing the Strait of Messina from Villa San Giovanni to visit one of the most beautiful towns on the Ionian Sea.
Taormina From Tropea
Wondering what to do with a day in Tropea? On this trip, we'll discover one of Sicily's great jewels. We'll meet at Largo S. Michele 8-9 and board a vehicle for a scenic 1.5-hour drive to Villa San Giovanni. You'll fall for the Calabrian coastline and the views over the Tyrrhenian Sea!
On arriving in Villa San Giovanni, we'll board a ferry to cross the Strait of Messina. The crossing takes around 30 minutes and is easily one of the most photogenic moments of the day. This narrow stretch of water separates Calabria from Sicily and is one of the most strategic maritime passages in the Mediterranean.
Once we disembark in Messina, we'll continue by road for around 50 minutes to Taormina, perched on a natural terrace above the Ionian Sea. We'll drop you at Porta Messina, one of the old entrances to the historic center, where you'll have 4 hours of free time.
We recommend strolling along Corso Umberto, the town's main artery, lined with stately palaces, medieval facades, flower-filled balconies, artisan shops, luxury boutiques, and cafés full of character.
Taormina has drawn Greeks, Romans, nobles, writers, and Grand Tour travellers throughout its history. Did you know its position on Monte Tauro gave it a hugely important defensive role?
Don't miss the chance to eat or grab a drink on one of the terraces in Piazza IX Aprile, or to wander the Villa Comunale, whose gardens offer magnificent views out to sea.
Finally, we'll regroup for the journey back to Messina, cross by ferry to Calabria, and complete the drive to Tropea. We'll say our goodbyes at the original meeting point after a total of 10 hours.
