On this day trip we'll discover the beauty of the Serra da Estrela mountain range, one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in Portugal.
Tour Description
At the indicated time, we'll meet at Avenida Emídio Navarro in Coímbra to start this day trip through the Serra da Estrela.
Our first stop will be Sabugueiro, an hour and a half from Coimbra. Did you know it's the highest village in Portugal, located at 1200 metres (3,937 ft) above sea level!
During our visit, we'll also talk about one of the oldest Portuguese shepherd dog breeds in the Iberian Peninsula, the Estrela Mountain Dog, and its importance in this area. Afterwards, we'll continue our journey to the highest point of the Portuguese mainland.
On the way, we'll pass by some of the emblematic places of this area: Mondeguinho, the source of the largest river in the country, the town of Manteigas, which is the “heart of the Serra da Estrela” and the headquarters of the UNESCO Estrela Geopark, the emblematic Zêzere Glacier Valley and Covão da Ametade.
Upon reaching the top, we'll find the Tower, a monument that will impress us with its 1993 metres (6,538 ft) and its incredible views of the Serra da Estrela. Then, you'll get the chance to taste some Queijo da Serra, a typical cheese from this region.
Then, we'll start the descent through the Ski Station and pass by Lagoa Comprida and Senhora do Desterro. Finally, we'll conclude the tour of Serra da Estrela arriving at the starting point after a total of 9 hours of hiking.
