Trancoso, Marialva & Linhares da Beira Excursion
At the appointed time, we'll meet at Praça Luís de Camões in Guarda to set off on this trip to Trancoso, Marialva, and Linhares da Beira, 3 of Portugal's most historic villages.
First, we'll visit Trancoso, a beautiful town considered one of the main villages of Portugal. As we explore, we'll review the history of this town, whose role was fundamental in the independence and maintenance of the country's borders.
We'll check out the remains of its medieval walls, as well as the exteriors of the Castle of Trancoso, two of the most important sites on Portugal's famous Route of Historical Villages (Grande Rota das Aldeias Históricas de Portugal), also called the GR22. With our cameras full of pictures of Trancoso, we'll head to the next village, Marialva.
The Castle of Marialva is sure to catch your attention from the moment we arrive, as this fortress watches over the medieval citadel from its center. We'll explore its medieval streets while we learn interesting stories about this town. In addition to the fortress, we'll also visit the churches of Marialva and the main square, home to remnants of the ancient city and the town's civil and administrative center.
Our next stop will be Linhares da Beira, one of the country's most coveted villages. Upon arrival, we'll see one of the best-preserved castles in Portugal, as well as its particular urban layout. As we'll soon see, the architecture of its old town matche perfectly with the local legends.
During our visit, we'll also check out Misericordia Church and the Igreja Matriz, or main church, both of which are of significant historical value. Finally, we'll return to the meeting point in Guarda after a total of 4 hours.
