Imagine visiting the infamous plane crash site of the 1972 tragedy in the Andes mountains. On this 4-day route, we'll visit the Valley of Tears hiking or on horseback!
Description
Day 1: Malargüe - El Barroso
We'll meet at El Cisne Hotel in this Argentinian town of Malargüe, where we'll kick off our 4-day unforgettable adventure into the Andes.
Our first stop is at El Sosneado, where we'll visit the National Gendarmerie, an Argentinian army base. After passing through the control point, we'll pause for lunch at a typical food cart often found in the Andes.
With a satiated appetite and our gear ready to go, we'll set off on foot or horseback to the Atuel River crossing in the west of the country. The hike will take 6.5 hours, while the equestrian route will take about 5 hours. The average elevation of this first day will be between 1480 metres (4855 ft.) and 2890 metres (9481 ft.).
Finally, we'll arrive at El Barroso, setting up camp for our first night.
Day 2: El Barroso - Valley of Tears - El Barroso
After starting the day with a full breakfast, we'll continue our expedition until we reach the Valley of Tears. We'll traverse the various streams and paths as we reach 3,700 meters (12,139 feet) above sea level. On this day, the route on foot will take 9 hours and the route on horseback will last between 7 and 8 hours.
This route on foot or on horseback will take you to the site where the tragic Andes plane crash occurred. This site has been transformed into a solemn shrine adorned with crosses, rosaries, and commemorative plaques. In honor of the fallen victims who stole the hearts of millions on that fateful day, October 13th, 1972, we'll pause in a moment of silence.
Following this solemn moment, we'll move to explore the site further, surrounded by nature's grandeur. As we stand in this space, surrounded by towering glaciers and mountains, we'll pause to admire the sheer beauty of the Andes mountain range.
Then, it's lunchtime, and from there, we'll begin our descent back to camp, where we'll spend the night and rest up after an emotionally exciting day.
Day 3: El Barroso - Malargüe
We'll start the day with a hearty breakfast as we reflect on the emotionally charged day before. Gathering our things and packing up camp, we'll begin our route to Ibarra. At this site, which is at around 1400 metres (4593 ft.), we'll bring our horseback (5 hours) or hiking (6.5 hours) route to an end and hop on a bus that will take us to the El Sosneado thermal baths. It'll be a welcomed and relaxing moment after a few days of camping.
Following our calming dip, we'll head in a vehicle to the Malargüe Hotel to enjoy our final evening together. Once at the hotel, we'll gather one last time to enjoy a slideshow of our adventure into the Andes.
Day 4: Malargüe
The 4th day of our adventure starts off with our favorite meal of the day: breakfast! Then, we'll leave Malargüe Hotel, bringing our 4-day experience to an end. Until next time!
