On this birdwatching tour on the Carretera Austral from Puerto Montt we'll spot the bird species that live along one of Chile's main land routes.
Birdwatching on the Carretera Austral
After picking you up at 11:00 am at your hotel in Puerto Montt, we will drive along the Carretera Austral to try to spot the birds that inhabit the natural environment along this iconic Chilean road.
First, we'll pass by the fishermen's coves of Coihuin, Chamiza and Piedra Azul until we reach the Pichi Quillaipe sector. From there, we'll continue along the Carretera Austral until we reach the beach resort of Pelluco. At this point we'll take a walk to see the main native birds.
If the conditions are favourable, we'll see endemic birds such as black-necked swans, southern pylons and gulls, among others. We'll then visit the church of Santa Cruz de Pelluco and follow the route along the Carretera Austral to Piedra Azul. There we'll make a short stop for a drink.
Afterwards, we'll take the Chilean Route 7, the official name of the Carretera Austral, back to the Lenca sector. Along this stretch we will try to observe other birds such as the cahuil or the chucao. Can you tell the difference between them? During the tour you will learn to distinguish them thanks to their plumage, the colour of their beaks and their trills, among other features.
From Lenca we will finally return to your hotel in Puerto Montt, where we will arrive at 4 pm.
