Join us on a guided walking tour of one of Portugal's most charming towns full of rich history as we explore Óbidos. Plus, enjoy a ginjinha tasting!
At the indicated time, we'll meet in front of the main door of the Óbidos Tourism Office. Once we're all together, we'll set off on an exciting tour through some of Óbidos' most interesting locations. Let's go!
Our first stop will be at the Óbidos Town Gate, the main entrance into Óbidos. We'll then walk to Óbidos Castle, where we'll admire its medieval military architecture. As we continue walking through Óbidos, we'll be immersed in the medieval charm of the flowered houses, the churches from different eras, and the squares where people come together.
Along our tour, we'll walk into the Mercado Biológico Bookstore, a unique shop that not only sells books but also fresh local produce.
After experiencing the serene environment in the bookshop, we'll head to Santa Maria Church, Óbidos' main church. Dating back to the Vigothic period, the church was converted into a mosque before ultimately being converted back to a Christian church in 1148. Having undergone various renovations, the current construction dates back to the 16th century.
Our stroll will take us through the Jewish Quarter next, before paying a visit to Saõ Tiago Church Bookstore. This beautiful 12th-century church, also known as 'Livraria de Santiago', now has books surrounding the altar! Moving on from this curious place, we'll reach a viewpoint from which we'll admire amazing views of the village and the surrounding countryside.
Finally, to add the finishing touch to this fantastic tour, we'll enjoy a tasting of a traditional Portuguese liquor, Ginjinha. Made by the infusion of berries in alcohol with various other ingredients, Ginjinha dates back to ancient times. We'll taste the liquor at a local bar, drinking out of the traditional chocolate cup. As we sip we'll learn more about its fascinating origins and its importance in Portuguese culture. Saúde!
